I'm really excited to finally be leaving for the Dominican Republic, nervous as well, but keen for some warmer weather and water.

Sailing an Opti for the last 2 years has given me some fantastic experiences in Australia and overseas. I've made friends from many different countries and and some really good friends in Australia. I would to thank all the people who sponsored my sail to the harbour enabling me to realise my dream of competing at a world championship.

I enjoy getting out on the water and chasing the wind.Going fast on my Opti is the best. I also really enjoy racing in a strong fleet, trying to work my way up to the top.

With sailing, I enjoy the challenges and the tough competition, the travel experience and making friends from interstate and all over the world.

Sailing is always different, at new places, the wind, the waves and the surroundings are always changing. I enjoy the feeling of a fast reach and being on the edge when you are running deep in heavy air, but mostly I enjoy racing and competing against my friends and best of all the feeling you get when you win.

What I like about sailing is the social interactiom with other sailors and the opportunity to meet new people from all around the world. i also like the pressure of competition and the great feeling of accomplishment after finishing every race!

Rob Brewer reports that their plane was delayed in Dallas because of strong winds, so they missed their connecting flight in Miami to the Dominican Republic. The good news is that the Australian sailors get to check out Miami for a while in the morning.

The Australian sailors have collected their brand new Far East charter boats and have been out training. Air temperature is 28 degrees, warm water and breeze ..... sounds perfect.

Jump onto the team's Facebook page and have a look at their photos of the facilities at Club Nautico. It looks more like a five star resort than a sailing club. Bit warmer than your last sail at Sandy jack?

Has anyone been able to find the results of the Pre Worlds Regatta. I've been over the event website a couple of times and I can't find them, perhaps I'm missing something obvious.

Hi Warwick I have had no luck finding the results. I am hoping they have tack tracker for the races.

Following the Australians at the Asian Championships live on Tack Tracker was brilliant, so I'm looking forward to doing the same through the Opti Worlds.

It was really interesting to see the top sailors playing the shifts to stay on the lifted tack and in the front row. Anyone who was lacking even a little boat speed fell out of the front row really quickly ..... I think that will be even ore obvious in this regatta.

Haven't worked out the time difference yet to see if it'll be possible to watch the racing live or whether it'll be the replays in the morning..

Results for the Helly Hansen Pre Championship Regatta have now been posted, there is a link to them at the top of this page. About 80 of the 250 boats entered in the World Championships contested this pre regatta event which was decided over three races.

Very little information has trickled through about the conditions or the racing, but as Rob Brewer mentioned on the team's Facebook page, there were some mixed and some pleasing results from the Australian sailors.

Just updated the link at the top of this page to make it a little easier to find Matias Capizzano's photo gallery for the 2012 Opti Worlds. There are already a lot of photos posted and trolling through them I saw a couple of Australian sailors. If you haven't seen any of his work before you're in for a treat. In my humble opinion he is second to none when it comes to photographing sailing regattas ..... enjoy.

I was just looking through some of the photos that have been posted on the event website, and noticed that the Singaporean's sails don't seem to have any sailmaker's brand.

Possibly J sails by the look of them but it's curious because there are plenty of photos of other boats sporting branded J Sails. One things for sure the Singaporean sailors are always very, very well prepared ... anyone have ideas about those sails?

The Dominican Republic is near enough to fourteen hours behind the east coast of Australia, so still a few hours before racing gets underway. For anyone watching the racing on Tack Tracker, it will be live tomorrow afternoon our time.

A number of people have contacted Dinghy Fever about following the Opti Worlds on Race Tracker. The link to the Race Tracker isn't easy to find, it's on the IODA website. Thanks to Joby Graves for letting us know, we have posted a quick link at the top of this page for your convenience.

Only one race completed on Day Three because of lingering thunderstorms and very shifty winds. It was a good day for the Australians with Jim scoring a 4th in his flight moving him up the scoreboard to now be in the top 100 boats. Kyle also had a great race scoring an 8th and Alistair a 17th.

The link to the complete list of results at the top of this page has now been updated.

Team Facebook page talks about Jim preparing his protest defense. Let's hope the protest is dismissed because a 4th is definitely a result you would want to stay on your scorecard at a Worlds.

If anyone has more info perhaps you could put up a small post.

Far East Boats are the official supplier for the Optimist World Championships in the Dominican Republic.

"After gaining valuable experience at the Optimist World Championships in New Zealand in 2011, Far East Boats completed yet another successful support mission, supplying perfect boats for the 2012 IODA Asian Championships in Sri Lanka.

Far East Boats once again demonstrated the qualities of finish, stiffness and consistancy in their "championship model" that makes them IODA's choice for major international regattas.

Sailing a Far East boat Loh Jia Yi from Singapore won the IODA Asian Championship, while in the teams racing event Singaporean sailors also took 1st place.

Far East Boats have been selected as the exclusive boat provider for the current IODA World Championships in the Dominican Republic and also the 2013 IODA Asian Championships in Hayama, Japan."

Okay ..... a quick summary of where we are up to so far.

So far we have results for the first four races, although it seems that about the half the fleet have actually completed their fifth race on Day 4. Naturally the results will be updated when everyone has completed the five races, but at this stage we have no report of how those Australian sailors who got in the fifth race faired.

Last night our time was qualifying for the teams racing event, and based on the individual results of the four sailors nominating for the team, Australia was seeded 28th. This meant their opponent in Flight A of the qualifying series was Chile who won that encounter. The Australian team then scored a bye in Flight B and progressed to Flight C where they were defeated by Italy.

In this scoring system, two losses and you are out of the competition, so unfortunately Australia was knocked out in the round of thirty-six. The qualifying round continued until only sixteen teams were left who will battle it out in the main event starting tomorrow.

Not surprisingly the well disciplined Singaporean team qualified first, followed by the team from USA and the team from Spain.

Well ..... the IODA World Championships have been wrapped up for another year,. Congratulations to the new Optimist World Champion, Yukie Yokoyama and her fellow Singaporean team mates who filled 2nd and 3rd place on the podium. In fact Singaporean sailors took four of the top five places which was a truly incredible result and speaks volumes for their program and the training they get from their national coach, Fernando.

One sailor who did throw out a challenge to the dominance of the Singaporeans was Bart Lambriex from the Netherlands who finished 4th overall.

The Australians had some mixed results but at times showed that they could be very competitive at this level. Jim strung together a 4th and a 3rd in consecutive races, but overall the Australians are still lacking the consistancy of the top nations like Singapore.

Final placings for the AOST sailors were;

Jim Colley 100th
Kyle O'Connell 108th
Alistair Young 155th
Jack Graves 160th
Kye Evans 178th
